There are various strategies I have adopted to increase my vocabulary but I have realized that without a proper guidance a I was lost in the sea of words.I will take this topic describing one by one.
Why it;s important to have large vocabulary:
- Increases your reading speed
- Improves IQ
- Improves your social status
- Useful & important for your academic career
Lets come to the strategies
1. Linking method
Our vocabulary's main part goes in describing persons, things, how one feels about someone, what could be the consequences of any event. In all these, almost 60% cases , you will need an adjective. Using linking method you can , a lot of words in a single day. I will tell you, how to learn 100 words in a single day. Using my strategies, you will be able to crack tough exams at very ease.
Suppose u want to learn word ' Cacophony'
It means "a harsh, discordant mixture of sounds."
You can easily link this word with Crow....crow
Crow cacophonous voice . You can imagine words coming out in the form of cacophony.
2. Similar words aggregation method
Suppose now have linked cacophony to crow , you can look for other words which are similar to cacophony using any simple online dictionary.
Here similar words for cacophony " din racket noise clamor discord dissonance discordance uproar"
I am using a few words
Dissonance :lack of harmony among musical notes
Clamor : a loud and confused noise, especially that of people shouting vehemently.
Now imagine this crow is producing cacophony though mouth.
Using it;s wing, he is stopping musicians to compose music thus no harmony & there is dissonance.
Using it;s legs, my dear crow is continuously thumping ground, producing loud confused noise , he is clamoring.
3. Levels of aggregation
You can always add a no. of levels of aggregation to organize your vocabulary.
Suppose Cuckoo is almost opposite in voice due to it;s sweetness , of course in voice
This is asian Emerald cuckoo . First you should understand there should be contrast in levels of aggregation otherwise they will mix in your memory, That's why I did not used Black cuckoo
You can relate him with a word " Mellifluous" as it being opposite of crow's cacophony
sweet-sounding dulcet honeyed mellow soft liquid silvery soothing rich smooth euphonious harmonious tuneful musical
4. Using Mnemonics
This is very quick technique to learn but using this technique longevity of word in memory is less.
Let;s take an example
faction -- this word might be confusing
let add r in f-- fraction for faction. as fraction is not complete so faction it is one dissenting group so making group like a fraction.
5. Using etymology
Many words are originated from a single root. If you are aware with root of words you can easily remember them.
'pug' is a root word which means fight
